France's role in Korean peninsula

june 15 meeting

On occasion of the 19th anniversary of June 15 North-South Joint Declaration

By Association d'amitie franco-coreenne (AAFC)

Reuniting at the occasion of its annual general assembly, the Franco-Korean Friendship Association wishes to join the celebration of the 19th anniversary of the historic North-South Joint Declaration signed on June 15, 2000.

The Declaration of June 15 was an essential contribution to the cause of the independent and peaceful reunification of Korea-divided against its will in 1945-the legitimate aspiration of the Korean people and vital issue for the peace of the world, because Korea remains a hotbed of tension where a conflict of global scale can always break out.

The first meeting of the top leaders of the two sides in June 2000, culminated in the signing of the June 15 Joint Declaration. Another summit meeting followed in 2007 and 2018, further strengthening the inter-Korean dialogue and raising the hope of independent and peaceful reunification of Korea.

It is the duty of France to support, with all the means at its disposal, this process which lays solid foundations for establishing a lasting peace, upgrading exchanges and promoting reunification between the two parts of the divided Korean peninsula. Therein lies the interest of France, which must follow an independent policy in Korea as elsewhere.

France remains European Union's sole country-with Estonia-that has no diplomatic relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The establishment of normal and balanced, diplomatic relations between France and the two Korean sides appears nevertheless as a measure which, in addition to being consistent with the French diplomatic tradition, would naturally make France play a positive role in Korea along the interest of the Korean people but also of all the peoples of the world.

The Franco-Korean Friendship Association will constantly remind the French authorities of their responsibility in this matter. For this, the Franco-Korean Friendship Association can rely on its experience of fifty years as well as the dedication of its members and leaders in serving peace and better comprehension between peoples despite the obstacles and difficulties.
