RESOLUTION OF THE CONFEDERATION OF LAWYERS OF ASIA-PACIFIC ON LIFTING OF SANCTIONS AGAINST NORTH KOREA

The Confederation of Lawyers of Asia –Pacific declares that sanctions against North Korea are in flagrant violation of International Law , as there is no threat to peace and security of the region from North Korea .

We call upon the United Nations, the United States , South Korea, and Japan, to immediately lift sanctions; as it is the military threats of the United States to North Korea and the joint military exercises held from time to time by the United States in and around the region of the Korean Peninsula directly targeting North Korea, which led to North Korea’s testing and developing nuclear weapons and missiles. Economic sanctions imposed on North Korea for resorting to self -defense measures to protect its people from the threats of the United States of America, a powerful military power, is prima facie unjust and unfair.

Imposition of sanctions in violation of International Law, are prima facie hostile acts calculated to incite tension and war in the region ; unjustified sanctions causing hardship to the people of the Korean Peninsula must be lifted; the Mt. Geugang tour and Kaesong Industrial complex facilitated, as these are internal issues of the people of Korea been longing for reunification.

The “South Korea –US Working Group on De-nuclearisation" has been misused and manipulated by the United States, primarily to interfere in the internal and domestic affairs of the Korean people, to prohibit inter-Korean exchange and co-operation.

The Confederation of Lawyers of Asia –Pacific calls upon the government of the United States of America to dissolve the “Working Group on De-nuclearisation” and to cease interfering with inter –Korean exchange and co-operation. Peace in North-East Asia can only be attained by withdrawal of all US troops from South Korea, this is the core or fundamental issue; this should be followed by the establishment of a ‘Zone of Peace’ for the entire Korean Peninsula.
